Transforming words and visions into reality is my motto. Writing invites ideas, histories, connections, creations, dreams, and aspirations to come to life. In a variety of ways, personal and professional stories move forward into our world: memoirs, biographies, fiction, nonfiction, family stories, articles, blogs, even grant writing. I bring 21 years of professional expertise to this sacred process of writing as a published author, independent scholar, and executive manager in the nonprofit arena. I provide editing, research, freelance and ghost writing, public speaking (e.g., workshops, sermons, and lectures), grant writing, grant reviewing, project management, and nonprofit consulting. My passion, skill, and experience in these many aspects of writing place me in a unique position to assist individual and organizational clients. My specialty areas include writing from a historical perspective, research, copy editing, grant writing, and project management. In September 2007, I founded Writing the World, LLC. This woman-owned small business is a registered Limited Liability Corporation in Colorado, U.S.A. I revamped my organizational website (www.writingtheworld.com) and started a blog on Hope from History in November 2013. Beginning with one editing client, I have worked with an additional twelve individuals and groups. I have been researcher and editor for author Rudolf C. Gelsey for almost seven years, beginning with his second book and now his third one, Mending Our Broken World: a Path to Perpetual Peace (4th edition, 2014). I also consult with his new nonprofit group, Perpetual Peace Initiative. I edit individual, one-time projects such as an independent scholar’s journal article (2014), doctoral student’s dissertation (2012), author’s first political intrigue novel (2009-10), among others. I provide copy editing plus substantive review. My primary passion has been writing since I first learned the alphabet. Throughout my schooling and career, I have called upon this skill. For example, in the early part of my professional life as a social worker, I wrote newsletter articles for the organization. I continued this journalistic strand in almost every other organization. Graduate work further strengthened my writing (M.S. in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Nebraska at Omaha; Ph.D. in Religion and Social Change from University of Denver/Iliff School of Theology Joint Ph.D. Program) along with honing my critical thinking and research capabilities. With this foundation, I became a published author in 2003. I publish book reviews in a variety of periodicals: The International Journal on World Peace, Nebraska History, Peace & Change, and The History Teacher. I produced numerous encyclopedia articles for BlackPast.Org along with others in forthcoming works, University of Kentucky African American Encyclopedia and Encyclopedia of American Historic Sites and Landmarks. Two chapters in anthologies discuss the lives and labor of former betabeleros (Mexican-origin beet field workers) in the sugar industry of Western Nebraska. My first full length book brings to life the spiritual journey of L. Maria Child (1802-1880), one of the most well-known activists and authors of 19th-century America (forthcoming from Swedenborg Foundation). Starting in the nonprofit world in 1993, I put my writing and communication skills to work as a successful grant writer and project manager. At New Foundations Nonviolence Center (1993-2005), I rose from Development Director to Executive Director. I remained in the latter capacity at Colorado Women’s Agenda (2005-6) where I developed three new programs: Inclusiveness Initiative, Grassroots Organizing, and Internship Program. I provided grant writing and editorial skills to Greater Denver Interfaith Alliance (2007-10). With Votaw Colony Museum, Inc., I co-coordinated our two-day public history events held in different locations in eastern Kansas (2006-11). I especially enjoyed my project management work at BlackPast.Org (2008-13) where I coordinated photo permissions for the group’s online reference center and developed a new section on African American and African Diaspora Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) history. Currently, I help New Community move forward in their organizational growth from an all-volunteer organization to one with paid staff and adequate funding. I created their website as one part of this growth (www.thenewcommunity.us).

I am a Project Maven. The more complex, the more difficult a project is in the beginning, the more enthusiastic I become. My goal is always to produce the high quality documents necessary for optimizing processes, defining goals, and clarifying 'reality.' Currently, my focus is on voice over work, mostly in narration and audio books. I am somewhat of a polymath, having done many varied jobs over my career, including Photojournalist, Bartender and Technical Writer. I have managed warehouses, restaurants, databases and construction contracts. I have written and/or edited Policies and Procedure manuals, Operations manuals and two (2) successful grant proposals. Once you have had me do a project for you, you will wonder how you ever got along without me.

I most enjoy working with multidisciplinary teams to design projects, navigate the complex regulatory and administrative landscape governing medical research, and build the systems necessary to support the endeavor. In my work as an independent research consultant, I help startup companies ensure compliance with FDA mHealth, marketing and social media requirements for health products. I also work with researchers to take studies involving human subjects from conception to IRB approval, provide audit support, and develop SOPs to maintain research in compliance with the Common Rule, HIPPA, Medicare National Coverage Determination, Good Clinical Practice Guidelines, and other governing regulations. I draw on my ten years of clinical and translational research experience at the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center, along with my formal education in law, bioethics and clinical trials management, to ensure the success of the project.
I am currently a freelance operations consultant & contractor and a prospective entrepreneur. My career in both food manufacturing operations and asset-based lending has provided me with complementary skills and knowledge of managing both qualitative and quantitative factors and how they interrelate. I am a systems-thinker and I enjoy developing and refining management systems, and measuring the qualitative and quantitative results after execution. I have been involved with various projects over the past 10+ years. During my 4 years in asset-based lending, I examined various companies in multiple industries and countries, participated in the acquisition of a publicly-traded foreign competitor, and relocated to London to establish European operations. During my 5+ years in food manufacturing, I developed numerous qualitative and quantitative management systems for internal purposes, developed new products, and contributed to strategic partnership development. However, this past year has been the most exciting as a freelancer: I was the lead consultant (independent) on a food product recall, I joined the Net Impact NYC Programs Committee for Pro Bono Consulting in an Operations Management capacity, dedicated most of my professional time to developing a Fruit Juice Startup Venture, and I am currently creating an operating budget model for a startup based in China. The following are my career highlights: Fruit Juice Venture - Authored 4,000-word Grant Application to the state of Michigan in order to obtain $250,000 in cost-reimbursements for both the marketing platform and production facility plan in lieu of incurring third-party debt and/or diluting equity. - Constructed multifunctional Excel financial model in order to forecast operational performance, budget capital requirements, and determine the economic viability of the business concept. Business & Operations Consultant - Designed and constructed MS Excel Operating Budget for Beijing-based agricultural research and news subscription startup venture by examining their operations in conjunction with the various revenues and costs related thereto. - Scrutinized and redesigned a USDA-regulated RTE facility's Standard Operating Procedures in immediate response to a 35,000 lb. food product recall. - Authored twenty (20) page Corrective Action Report that the establishment included in its final report for the USDA District Office. General Manager of Food Manufacturing Division - Supervised and coordinated all facets of manufacturing division including cost and investment analysis, forecasting, procurement ($30 million annual budget), labor utilization ($5 million annual expense), overall equipment/people effectiveness, inventory planning & control, regulatory compliance, product development, and strategic customer support. - Achieved $1.5 million (5% of total variable cost) per annum cost reduction, 30% process capacity increase, 28% labor productivity increase, and 7% multifactor productivity increase through manufacturing strategy reassessment, management task consolidation, line balancing & sequencing, procurement proficiency, and capital investments. Vice President of Investments - Prospected, analyzed, negotiated and structured over $250 million of executed investments in various plant, property & equipment spanning different industries in multiple countries. - Chief analyst on $150 million acquisition of a publicly-traded competitor that expedited the efficient transition and integration of the competitor’s business development team.
Over the past 10 years, I have worked with a variety of non-profits on projects including grant writing, fundraising, development, marketing and training and program development. Both as an employee and consultant, I have gained valuable experience and expertise. As owner of Charitable Concepts and Consulting, I am looking for opportunities to continue my work with non-profits or businesses in a variety of areas. My interests include grant writing, program development, outcome measurement and presentation design.
For more than 20 years, I have: - edited and shepherded hundreds of technical books to successful completion on slippery, super-fast deadlines for Microsoft - managed teams and projects virtually, in-person, globally and locally, all with patience, humor, diplomacy and executive decision-making abilities - revised websites and written content to increase user traffic, comprehension and interest - interviewed major gift donors and written grant proposals to secure funding for everything from operating children's film festivals to putting a copper roof on a cathedral to adding a science wing to a school - written and edited thesis proposals and manuscripts for publication in academic journals The common thread? Understanding and anticipating the goals and scope of a project and its intended audience, then delivering content in the most relevant, useful and compelling way possible. What can I do for you?
