Perfectly fluent in English and French, I'm qualified to translate from one language to the other with equal ease and proficiency and with an in-depth grasp of both languages and cultures. For me, translating is like a game: juggling with words until they express the same meaning but also the same spirit and vitality in the target language as they did initially. Over the last 7 years, I have acquired significant experience translating and proofreading websites, press books, sustainable development reports, product catalogues and various marketing materials and business correspondence. I am seeking opportunities to apply my language skills on a larger scale starting, why not, with your business. I also have extensive experience as a VA and teaching English as a foreign language with tailor-made lessons for any level.

As accurate as possible, as fast as necessary. My specialties as a translator are the humanities, especially music. I have translated experimental literature, essays, presentations and prefaces to musical scores. While I generally work fast, I can be very dogged about researching problem cases. My knowledge of English is certified: I have studied English linguistics (M.A., University of Tübingen). Formal knowledge of German grammar was always on my radar as a translator, but was completed during my marriage with a non-German-speaker.. I have since taught German as a foreign language to Indians, Spaniards and Americans (with English and Spanish as preliminary teaching languages). Getting acquainted with new software doesn't scare me. I have worked with spreadsheets and word processors on Windows, Apple and Linux machines and with databases on Apple.
Over the last six years, I've copy-edited a variety of dissertations and academic articles within the humanities and sciences, and I've developed a close familiarity with details of grammar and citation styles (as I've worked as both a freelance copy-editor and as the Assistant Director of a university-level writing center). Additionally, I've served as the Editor of a major university's literary journal for four years, copy-editing creative writing and, more recently, full-length novels. I've been freelancing on a full-time basis since August, and I've specialized in editing narrative nonfiction, memoir, and novellas & novels of various genres (including, but not limited to: science fiction, fantasy, romance, paranormal romance, literary fiction, and horror). As a published writer (of academic articles, guest blogs, fiction, poetry, book reviews, and creative nonfiction) and a freelance copy-editor, I've accumulated numerous experiences which translate to a more well-rounded copy-editor and developmental editor. I have a particular interest in literary and scientific writings, and read widely in both fiction and nonfiction, allowing me a wide familiarity with various types of texts and professional expectations from separate academic and professional communities. I've also served as a developmental editor on novels, memoirs, and autobiographies. While I am new to oDesk, I'm working to build a varied portfolio and form lasting working relationships with individuals and companies in need of strong editors. My rates and availability are very flexible depending on the job required, so please query me if interested!

Do you need someone to Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate (ADDIE Method) training courses? Do you want to make sure your learners get the most out of those courses, and that you are getting the best result possible for your dollars spent? You need me. I have degrees in marketing (B.Sc.) and education (M.A.), and am a current part time doctoral (Ed.D.) student where my area of research is on maximizing long-term learning outcomes from training programs. This gives me a strong foundation of math, statistics, research methodology, and teaching pedagogy to build on. I have a strong publication and conference presentation history, and I am happy to share my knowledge of learning pedagogy and materials development with anyone. I also have a proven history of materials development, having published more than 20 textbooks used in millions of lessons every year. I have trained thousands of employees in skills such as business communication, regulatory compliance, technology usage, adult learning pedagogy, and even retail sales. I started my teaching career in Japan, and soon became a lecturer at Waseda University. There, I really developed as a teacher and learned firsthand that results-oriented teaching was best. As I got better at teaching and knew more about pedagogy, I started getting hired as a consultant for various companies in Japan. I was able to bring great success to all my projects, and soon was consulting for Global Fortune 500 companies such as Nissan, Nippon Steel, and Teijin Pharmaceuticals. I always approached each client’s situation with open eyes and a solid understanding of how people learn. Years later I was given a chance to lead a massive retraining initiative for a chain of schools in Japan called Gaba, which involved the creation of an entirely new blended learning curriculum, the introduction of the first online learning tools used there, and the training of more than a thousand teachers in how to use these new online tools and materials. This required extensive data collection, assessment, and description. I worked every day with both front-line teachers and senior leadership to achieve the learning outcomes we needed. After two years, the teaching and learning had improved greatly, and the new curriculum was working well. I then decided to return to the USA. Most recently, I was working for the U.S. Department of Defense, developing and presenting employee training in adult learning theory, learning materials development, and eLearning tool usage. There, I created offline and eLearning materials for employee education programs, and worked with subject matter experts to create software usage and regulatory compliance workshops for teachers.
