What I practice is best described as inductive reasoning, otherwise known as inferential statistics. The essential difference between deductive reasoning, sometimes called frequentist statistics, and inductive reasoning, sometimes called Bayesian statistics, is that the former inverts the data to describe some model, whereas the latter inverts some model to describe the data. Another difference which arises in practice is that the predictions of the former are usually based on the mode (most likely value), whereas predictions of the latter are based on the mean (expected value). For example, given that a batter strikes out on the first appearance at the plate of the season, the mode prediction for getting a hit on the second appearance is 0, whereas the mean prediction is a little under 50%. That estimate, of course, neglects any knowledge derived from last year's season. As plenty of batters manage to get hits on their second at-bat following a strikeout, I would happily take a bet from someone using the mode to predict that no batter will ever follow a strikeout with a hit.
