I specialise in travel writing and marketing for the travel industry. I've won Malta Travel Writer of the year twice, have a weekly newspaper travel column, and edit travel sections for Allied Newspapers. I write brochures and marketing copy for national tourism boards, as well as numerous tour companies and travel websites. Creative, funny, practical, quirky; I can delve into a variety of styles dependent on the project, but I understand that the best writing effectively engages the audience, and subtly delivers the underpinning message of the client. Throughout my work I subtly soft sell the destination or travel product. Rather than bombard the reader with superlatives and cliches, I allow the reader to build their own impressions and convince themselves that a product or destination is amazing. I take huge pride in my work and ability to achieve this. I run a video marketing business (see www.thefatdogs.com) that specialises in the travel industry. I've created promotional videos for national tourism boards and large international clients like the South Africa Youth Travel Confederation, Travlaw, and the LAL group. As well as high quality video production, The Fat Dogs also support clients with video marketing strategies, video hosting, and linking video content with social media. I am also the author of "Sports Source" a guide to developing sport in the UK, and spent two years as editor of a large UK clubbing website. I have extensive experience in wordpress and HTML5, and understand the importance of SEO to all online work. I have many years experience writing for websites, both in my professional life working at national and international sporting organisations in the NRL, Super Rugby and Cricket Australia; and my own personal website - www.travellingapples.com. Since joining oDesk I have written for clients in a wide variety of industries including automotive, retail, health and fitness, real estate, sport and education. As you can see from my ratings and comments I am more than capable of producing high quality work across a wide range of areas. I have a Bachelor of Education Degree and was a schoolteacher for five years before embarking on a nine year career working in professional sport as a media manager, digital media manager and General Manager of Communications. I then started my own business from scratch, which was a first for me, before selling it to help fund my family's current global nomadic adventure. I also have extensive experience managing social media platforms, particularly Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I established the Melbourne Storm's social media platforms, building the Facebook following to over 110,000. I was also contracted by Etihad Stadium in Melbourne in 2013 to establish their social media presence, with particular focus on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, with huge success.
I have over twenty years experience in customer service, Arts administration, teaching, voice-over work, management, creative writing, non-profit work, improvisational comedy and public speaking. I hold two BA degrees, one in Communication Studies and one in Theater Performance, and also a Masters degree in Liberal Studies/Interdisciplinary Studies. I have taught privately, in the NC school system and also as an adjunct professor (during which time I served on various thesis committees). Presently I serve as the Artistic Director of a non-profit theater company.I have also been the co-company manager of an improv comedy group for the last 20 years. I have numerous years experience writing press releases, forming curriculum, training employees, leading group activities and workshops (corporate and public sector) and also managed a retail establishment for 5 years. I am comfortable working as part of a team or on my own, and have a strong work ethic, accompanied by a professional attitude and good time management skills. Along with my "real world" experience, I have been a director of plays and variety shows for over 20 years, and have directed casts of over 100 people on quite a few occasions. I have strong leadership skills, enjoy helping others reach their goals and an active imagination that I enjoy applying to projects. I have also organized several fund raisers and charitable events. Regardless of the work setting, whether customer service, writing, management or performance, I posess the ability to be creative and have relied upon my ability to think "outside the box" to the benefit of myself and my employers. I also have a strong sense of humor (which goes a long way towards avoiding experiencing or causing stress!). I enjoy researching and am a quick study of disciplines that are new to me. I have, for the last 8 years, also been a privately contracted in-bound phone call service agent. I am comfortable dealing with situations that require discretion, and am detail oriented. Please feel free to contact me about "unusual" jobs as well (legal of course!). Thank you for reading my profile, hope to hear from you!
My 20+ year career in communicating ideas has come full circle on the Web. I am a trained Journalist, Filmmaker, and former Fulbright Scholar who can work with you on a variety of writing, marketing, crowdfunding, and media needs. Special knowledge in film history, film criticism, and the arts. An American English native speaker, I also have a background teaching English as a second language.
If you need something to be written, particularly something funny or entertaining, I can guarantee it in advance. I work fast and I accept nothing less than my best. I can produce comedy in any form- I write news articles, scripts for sitcoms, films, and short films, websites, etc. I'm also one of the top 5 greatest actors of all-time; most of the voices in that video next to this are mine. There's also a V.O. reel, as well as two editing ones, in my portfolio. I spent two years in Hollywood pursuing comedy writing. In the spring of 2012 I won Best Comedy at the 10th annual DIY Film Festival for a film I made 100% on my own (played every part, was the entire crew). In the past two years, I've published something like 55 videos that've gotten in excess of 20 million views (I've lost track). I do everything for these videos except for the animating. I write the scripts, find the actors, direct them, do my own voice acting (make my wife do voice work, as well), edit the audio, direct my animators (who live in 3rd world countries), edit their animations, and voila- an animation made for a few hundred bucks that 100k people will see in the first month. I wish I didn't have to be a one-man crew (minus the animating), but my standards are too high for amateurs, and professionals are just that- professionals working in the industry (not for freelancers with small, per-episode budgets like me). So, yeah- hire me and whatever it is you need, I'll exceed your expectations. Because if I don't exceed yours, then I haven't met my own. I'm internally motivated- my motivation comes from within. I don't work to get paid, I work to accomplish my goal, which is for my work to blow you away. It's like giving someone a Christmas gift and seeing their eyes light up when they open it- you're like, "yes! Nailed it!" If you get my work and are like, "yeah, this'll do," that's devastating- I want to see those eyes light up and know I nailed it. Oh, and I'm also good at over-explaining stuff. Meaning, I tend to explain more than is necessary to get the point across. In other words, so much explaining that it goes over the amount of explaining that was necessary.
I'm a professional multi-media journalist who can write, edit, research, produce, and design high-quality content on almost any topic and for any medium. From creating blog and social media posts to complete marketing communications plans, I have worked with clients including university programs, acupuncturists, chefs, commercial painters, e-commerce sites, news sites and forums, and more. I do not compromise my high ethical standards. Sorry, but I do not accept jobs that involve "ghostwriting" without credit, "spinning" and stealing others' copyrighted work, or other shady practices. What you get with me is a passionate, hard-working, detail-oriented, mass communications expert. What you do not get is someone who will rush the job or be a mindless "yes man" -- if I accept a job then I am committing to give you my best work effort, and that includes sometimes offering suggestions or advice -- getting you the final product you NEED, not just the one you think you want. I generally do not do Skype interviews or meetings for any projects paying less than $1,000. I am happy to answer any questions through ODesk or email, and I am happy to do a trial period for any ongoing positions. Sorry, but the reason I choose to do online freelancing is to make my own schedule and work in my pajamas; if you can't deal with that then best of luck finding someone who is a better fit for you.
