Living through tumultuous times, enduring instability, and suffering from problems too often faced by many inner-city youth, Jordan Karabegovic more notably known as ‘J Freedome’ has learned to transform stumbling blocks into stepping stones through creative expressions. The artistic, yet logical thinker had immersed himself in many facets of the creative world from an early age.
Having grown up in a troubled Toronto inner city neighborhood in less then favorable household circumstances, ‘J’ as called by his peers sought a way to express his feelings, and gain the attention he lacked as a youth. Raised by his immigrated grandparents, ‘J’ had to learn to expand his talents on his own and use his numerous experiences as fuel to further develop himself.
‘J’ started to write poetry at the tender age of 8 and was asked to recite them in his class. He had a unique and smooth and deep voice that made his poetry sound like rap when he recited it. At 10 years old, he decided to attempt to rap his poetry and to his shock, his classmates responded with excitement and anticipation. This attention started a ‘writing and reciting’ trend that never left the now fully-grown ‘J’. He maintained writing poetry as well as lyrics and started performing at all local talent shows. Meanwhile he travelled to many American cities, even staying for whole summers and winters in other places. This fused within him a unique culture of his immediate European and Caribbean heritage with the multi-cultural influence of Toronto and Urban American ways of life.
J Freedome loved to sketch and create designs in his off time from music. He eventually grew up to learn a lot of graphic design techniques and even sell his services to businesses and fellow music artists. Furthermore, a need for production was necessary to finally record songs to release to the public via local radio and clubs. This is where he developed his production skills. ‘J’ already had a vision of himself as an artist and therefore wanted to control all aspects of his hobby turned profession. After learning about music technology and developing the needed skills to create what he made in his mind, ‘J’ bought enough music equipment to build a personal studio where he could produce and record music for himself, his team, and other local artists.
Fast forward into the present day, and you can behold a professional producer having produced for television networks such as HGTV, City TV, and The Score. He has also produced for music artists such as Kinetic 9 of Wu Tang, Frukwan of the Grave Diggaz, The Bootcamp Click, E-Dot of Uncle Howie Records, IMAKEMADBEATS, Midaz The Beast, Roc C of Stones Throw, and Grammy nominated producer Boi-1da to name a few.
J Freedome has performed across North America, The Caribbean, and Europe, been featured as an actor, model, performer, on numerous television shows, won international producer competitions, and been featured on many acclaimed music websites, blogs, and magazines.
“This is just the beginning now that I’m getting the hang of this.” – J Freedome
