Creative, Experienced, Real World Graphic Design, Typography and Copywriting. Have you ever hired a graphic designer, only to have them come up with something so elaborate that you couldn't afford to print it? That is because they didn't understand the printing process or the capabilities and limitations of the equipment that you planned to produce it on. That is where I come in. I have spent my career in graphic design and possess a strong printing background. Don't get me wrong, I love to design the tricked out invitation or presentation with foil and embossing and spot varnishes and die cutting and gluing and lots of pantone and metallic inks - only problem, it is not in most budgets. Graphic design is about ideas, but it is also about details. I like to think that I am good at both. The greatest idea can fall flat if it is not properly executed - typography, spelling, use of photography, consistent branding... all are important to a successful project. As a designer, I had to learn that not every job is a masterpiece, that time is money and clients need to work within deadlines and cost constraints. So I learned to take my ego out of the job and adapt to customer needs. The first step in every job is to determine what it is that you need and then to create a compelling design that fits your parameters. I have spent many years in the advertising and printing fields. Both of these businesses gave me the opportunity to work with people in all types of industries - from small business to huge corporations, retail to manufacturing, service businesses to restaurants, tradesmen to professionals - I have designed for them all. So what are you looking for? Brochures, Flyers, Catalogs, Magazines, Books, Letterheads, Envelopes, Business Cards, Business Forms, Menus, Table Tents, Advertisements, Invitations, Door Knob Hangers, Packaging, Labels, Presentations, Annual Reports, Logo Design, Corporate Identity Packages - if it ends up as ink on paper I have done it and would be happy to create something for you - on time and on budget.

Print production ad web design involved different skill sets and the stakes are high. Unlike an easily fixed mistake on a web page, a printing mistake can be expensive to resolve. I am an expert in print production, including book interiors and book covers, magazines, newspapers and newsletters, brochures and white papers, business collateral and more. Print layouts can easily be exported to web designs and e-reader formats, but it's not as easy to go from web to print. I will design your layouts once for many uses, including ebooks for Nook, Kindle, Sony and others. "Being there" for my clients is especially important to me, and I'm proud of my on-going client list here on oDesk. My clients seem to refuse to close out their accounts even when we don't have an active project. :-) During my 38+ years of graphic design within the printing and publishing field, I have witnessed and adapted to the many changes in technology as it relates to the industry. Today's focus trends to self-publishing authors and small businesses, including preparing books for publication sites such as CreateSpace, Lightning Source, Lulu and others in both print and ebook formats. Most of the changes in the print industry have been in the way that typography, photography and art meet and make their way to the printed page. We used to do this with light tables, punch-tape and exacto knives, now we use computers for the whole process. Offset presses have largely remained the same, and the digital presses use the same file types so prepress ideas have remained the same, with technology replacing the hand pasting and stripping departments. My complete knowledge of the process from idea to print serves me well in achieving my client's goals in the most economical fashion possible. I have been using the industry standard computer programs for over 20 years, including Adobe CS6 programs. There are special factors related to putting computer generated art onto paper vs. the computer monitor. Things like color space, RGB vs. CMYK; raster vs. vector; high and low resolution and when to use each one. With my experience and knowledge, I know how to deliver the right file type for the publication method, and how to use the same developmental files to create products that are suitable for both print and e-delivery, saving time and money on multi-use projects. Although printed material is far from leaving us, more and more publication is done in e-formats. Setup of material for printing and e-publication is similar, but there are many specific aspects that need to be addressed in the publication of e-books, online magazines and other multi-media. As the industry changes, so do my skills. I continue to learn and expand my knowledge base in the Graphic Arts, enabling me to provide my clients with the best print and publishing designs for paper and electronic media. I'm enjoying every step of the process. I do know the basics of web design, but have chosen to focus on print-style design, rather than web sites and web pages, and I can help my client's with their basic web-site needs.
