With over ten years of experience in Investigative Research, I'm not your ordinary paralegal. Experienced audit investigator, business analyst, researcher, and newly certified paralegal, with extensive state government background in Washington State Workers’ Compensation Insurance, whistleblower and labor laws, personal pro se experience in family law, corporate law, litigation, eleventh hour discovery, public records, and appellate court motions, procedures and brief writing, I am seeking contract work for attorneys, law firms, private investigators, fraud auditors, insurance companies and government agencies in need of unique skill-set. Disclaimer: I will not accept any unlawful contract work (for example, tasks that in any way ask me to perform unauthorized practice of law... as a certified paralegal, I legally can only sign court documents, prepare memorandums, filing legal pleadings, etc. when contracted under a licensed attorney) and will require proof of your license to practice law if you are for these types of tasks. If you are not an attorney, the ways I can help you mainly center on legal research, helping you find the information you seek, and assisting you in completing forms. Additional Terms & Conditions: Due to privacy and plagiarism concerns, my resume and work samples are only available by request. Fees: Odesk only monitors your contracts for hours worked, not completed milestones, quality of work, etc.. It may seem cheaper to hire someone willing to work well below minimum wage, but remember that you get what you pay for, and when you are dealing with legal research and technical writing, there could be hefty legal, including monetary, ramifications, especially if you are already facing sanctions and lawsuits. The same is true for UML documentation and audit tools. Too often projects try to skip the "documentation" only to realize two years into it that they missed the most vital business rules. By getting quality work now, you can save your business owners and shareholders thousands of dollars. My fees may seem higher than many of the contractors on this site who are not bound by the U.S. federal wage laws, but my fees are well within what is normal and expected for paralegals of my experience in the United States (please also note that the United States has a federal minimum wage law; if you are asking anyone in the United States to work below that, you are violating federal law). I also work more quickly (because of my experience) resulting in less hours you are billed. My fees not only include quality of work and experience, but my own business expenses as well (I only get a percentage of what you pay, as I have my own business overhead expenses and taxes that are taken out first). Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about my experience and qualifications. You may also visit my website, www.advantageparalegalsvcs.com. Please remember again that I cannot give legal advice or engage in the unauthorized practice of law. Current ABA Definition of Legal Assistant/Paralegal: At the August 1997 ABA Annual Meeting, the ABA's policy making body, the House of Delegates, adopted the current definition of "legal assistant/paralegal", as recommended by the Standing Committee on Legal Assistants. The current definition reads as follows: A legal assistant or paralegal is a person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible. The current definition of "legal assistant/paralegal" replaces the definition adopted by the ABA Board of Governors in 1986. It adds the term "paralegal" since the terms "legal assistant" and "paralegal" are, in practice, used interchangeably. The term that is preferred generally depends on what part of the country one is from. The current definition streamlines the 1986 definition and more accurately reflects how legal assistants are presently being utilized in the delivery of legal services. Updated: 08/14/2008  less
