Traveling, living, and doing research in Latin America over 35 years has produced 3 books on El Salvador, a guide to Machu Picchu, two edited books on Mexico and peacekeeping, and dozens of articles on topics from civil war in El Salvador to points of interest in and around Niagara Falls. Along the way, I have acquired skills in resume writing, PowerPoint, and editing. In recent years photography has become a passion, accompanied by a growing portfolio of travel writing.

I’m writer and editor, living in the San Francisco Bay area. My 11 years at the San Francisco Business Times made me a fast, accurate writer on many subjects, from starting a small business to complex finance reporting. I was also the newspaper's copy editor for many years. My work includes many years as a digital content producer and web editor, with a focus on financial reporting, breaking news and small business coverage. Working with writers from veteran reporters down to raw interns has given me the ability to learn to polish good writing and overhaul poor writing. My fluency in the AP Stylebook and Chicago Manual of Style makes me an excellent proofreader able to take even the rawest of copy and bring it in to compliance. I am looking for writing, proofing and editing jobs on any subject.
I am a native English speaker (UK), who is currently living in Thailand. I read law at university, LLB(Hons) Grade 2:1, then studied the Bar Vocational Course receiving the grade Very Competent. The BVC required an exceptionally high command and useage of the English language, as well as the ability to be concise, accurate and succinct whilst being aware of the target audience. The course also needed excellent research skills and analytical ability. My previous employment in the UK was with a Housing Association. Part of my role included producing a tenant newsletter - writing articles, editing articles, proof-reading articles. I am highly organised and reliable. I complete any tasks in an efficient and timely manner, whilst consistently working to the highest standards possible. I have experience writing about a wide range of topics, including travel, loans, metaphysical, studying abroad, EFL activities and real estate. I am an avid and seasoned traveller.
I believe in excellence. Writing isn't about just putting words on paper, it's about expressing ideas. Like any art, the writer has only been successful if the reader sees what he sees, hears what he hears, and feels what he feels. I am an experienced writer with over 180 books published; in addition to my 500+ page web site and 3 blogs. Let's just say, I've been writing for a while. I started writing as an engineer, writing proposals for the company I worked for. As such, my writing had to be clear, concise and answer the questions before they were asked. My writing had to convince the higher-ups in the company to spend money, make changes and believe in what I was saying. When I write, I strive for clarity, simplicity and something that will stir the reader to action. Any subject, no matter how dull it seems, has something in it that can excite; otherwise it would die from apathy. I want to find that thing which excites and express it to others. I have Five general areas in which I consider myself a strong writer. While each of them seem totally separate from each other, they form the structure of who I am, and where I've come from. 2 - Survival and Prepping - I started out as a survivalist as a teen, in the 1970s. That was the latter days of the Cold War and along with some friends, I had plans to head for the Colorado Rockies. Seeing the need, I started studying survival. I guess that just never left me. With the resurgence of interest in survival brought about in the modern prepping movement, I decided that my knowledge was needed. There is too much being written by people who don't know survival, to sell to this niche. When I write about it, it's from the viewpoint of personal experience. When I explain how to do something, it's because I've already done it. 1 - Technical subjects - I'm not talking about product reviews here, I'm talking about engineering technical subjects. As a former engineer, I can grasp technical issues, and explain them in a way that others can grasp what I am saying. Although not normally considered "technical" I must include the building trades amongst this, as I have also been a contractor. If you need "how-to" articles written on the building trades, I can almost do it in my sleep. I find that very few technical people can write well, and very few writers understand technical issues well. I guess that makes me the oddball. Maybe I'm the oddball you need. 2 - Education - I am passionate about the need to educate our children; to bring about reform in our schools; and to bring technology into the classroom. If something isn't done about our educational system, the United States will no longer be able to be world leader, we'll slide back into being a third world country. 3 - Marriage and Family - Amongst my personal writing, there is a fairly large section dealing with marriage, family issues, child raising, and maintaining a healthy marriage relationship. Of my three blogs, one is a daily posting; it is called: "Romantic Act of the Day." Need I say any more? 4 - Christianity and the Bible - Most of the books I have written are for Christians, the Church and teaching about the Bible. I hold a masters degree in Biblical Studies, and an honorary doctorate degree, awarded to me for my writing. No, I don't know it all, I'm just trying to learn it all. I won't say that I can't write about other areas, because I can. I have written a fair amount about business as well. But these four areas are my strengths. The question is, are those the strengths you need?
I have a B.A. in English literature, a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Toronto, and 13 years of experience in academic writing and grant writing. During my academic career I have published 3 articles in top rated academic journals in my field, and 7 more as book chapters and conference proceedings. I have also presented my work at many academic venues, thus having perfected the skill to present any amount of information in a concise, clear, and engaging manner. During my graduate studies, I also regularly wrote grant proposals, and have managed to secure several highly prestigious federal and provincial grants. Over the course of 6 years, I have raised a total of over 130,000$ for my own academic research. My academic experiences have taught me that I genuinely enjoy the process of synthesizing ideas (my own and those of other people) into a compelling narrative. I started working as a freelance writer recently, and have already had experience writing grant proposals for a small non-profit start-up in Toronto, as well as writing and editing a couple of kickstarter projects. I greatly enjoyed this type of work, and look forward to more opportunities to help others with their research and writing needs. I believe that I can effectively apply my curiosity and skills to virtually any field of writing, editing or research.
I have many years experience writing for websites, both in my professional life working at national and international sporting organisations in the NRL, Super Rugby and Cricket Australia; and my own personal website - www.travellingapples.com. Since joining oDesk I have written for clients in a wide variety of industries including automotive, retail, health and fitness, real estate, sport and education. As you can see from my ratings and comments I am more than capable of producing high quality work across a wide range of areas. I have a Bachelor of Education Degree and was a schoolteacher for five years before embarking on a nine year career working in professional sport as a media manager, digital media manager and General Manager of Communications. I then started my own business from scratch, which was a first for me, before selling it to help fund my family's current global nomadic adventure. I also have extensive experience managing social media platforms, particularly Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I established the Melbourne Storm's social media platforms, building the Facebook following to over 110,000. I was also contracted by Etihad Stadium in Melbourne in 2013 to establish their social media presence, with particular focus on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, with huge success.
I am a professional writer with extensive experience in creating content for print and web. I have written thousands of articles and product descriptions for the pet industry, medical industry, beauty industry, IT, and more. When it comes to graphic design, I created my first catalog in 1991, and since then I've worked with PageMaker, Quark Xpress, and InDesign to make countless catalogs, calendars, ads, and similar. I am also the author of more than a dozen science fiction books. Besides writing and design, I work with social media and maintain accounts for a number of clients. I am the winner of the 2012 Royal Palms award, the 2012 Dahris Clair Award, and the 2014 WildSound Festival.
