When I was a child, everyone said I was shy. Their judgement of my demeanor was based on one obvious personality trait: my quietness. I excused them of their post hoc conclusions (they were just kindergartners after all) and went on with my business, and my business was thinking. Though as a child my problem-solving and thinking skills were limited to pulling off grand toy heists from my preschool (overalls were the key to success) and charming my way out of trouble, those skills grew and I began to use them not to be a troublemaker but to grow ideas. At the age of 18, I co-founded my first business which satisfied my need to problem-solve, my enthusiasm for open-source software, and my passion for writing. And though that business eventually dissolved so the co-founders could pursue other projects, the time I spent there was invaluable; this was where I really cut my teeth professionally and set the course for my future ventures. I refrained from jumping into another multi-person project, however, choosing instead to focus on finishing my degree and working independently. So I spent those next couple of years working as a copywriter and editor, working primarily within the technology, entertainment, and eCommerce sectors. I also gained experience working with companies in places like Dubai, Bejing, and Moscow, offering my services as a native English speaker and copy-editor. In that time, I also graduated with my degree in research psychology, which only strengthened my ability to contemplate various problems, find solutions and articulate those solutions verbally and in writing. After graduating I spent the next few years working as a grant writer for a local nonprofit. And by the young age of 24, I was promoted to a full-time position as the acting Director of Administration. In my position now, as a copyeditor and product development specialist, I’m getting back to my roots as an open-source enthusiast, development specialist, and writer. So though I’ve grown much more articulate and outspoken than my kindergarten self, my business is still thinking and not only do I love it, I’m really great at it.  less

The written word has been a passion most of my life, and it became my career 18 years ago. Since 1997 I have written and edited copy for magazines and newspapers through freelancing and being on staff. From 1999-2007 I worked as a general assignment and beat reporter for a newspaper, and took over as managing editor in 2001. My responsibilities included editing copy of other staff writers and providing photographs for the newspaper as well as myriad publications put out by our publishing company. From 2007-2013 I lived in Australia and worked under contract with a national publication group for which I provided copy and photographs for travel magazines. My go-to handbooks for writing and editing are Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style," "Chicago Manual of Style," and the most current version of "The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing and Media Law." That said, I respect language and the nuance punctuation provides to make copy snappy, interesting and readable. I believe that in editing, the author's voice is more important than following "rules." Of course spelling, grammar and punctuation are of utmost importance. I keep a light hand while editing unless the project needs an overhaul--which would be discussed with the author before I made any changes. There is a skill to tell captivating stories. There is also a skill in capturing moments with a camera to inspire the soul. I look forward to working with you.  less

Writing has been a big component of my academic and professional career. In college, I provided guidance for struggling students as an on-campus writing tutor. When I wasn't in the library fixing syntax and grammar, I was in the newsroom fulfilling my duties as a content, layout, and copy editor. As an Instructional Technology Assistant at Carnegie Mellon University, I was tasked with writing up reports pertaining to my observations and duties. In my capacity as a risk manager with an insurance firm, I wrote reports detailing the extent of any given client's financial options within the legal confines of the Pennsylvania Workers' Compensation Act. Given my extensive writing background, I can offer to: - proofread and edit your works - create original content - write articles - compose essays - research and present a given subject - analyze policy text - offer creative input My background suits me for a wide variety of writing-related work. Whether your linguistic needs call for innovation or standard boiler plate format, I have the skills necessary to accommodate them. I am familiar with APA, MLA, and Chicago styles.  less

Greetings, prospective client! My name's Warren Hinckle, and I'm an editor with a knack for the written word, how the English language flows on the page, for writing - and I've even dabbled in transcription. More than that, I enjoy all of this. Seriously. If I didn't I'd ditch freelancing as a career and try to get a stable job with things like 'security' and 'benefits' and 'fair wage' and 'pay by the hour' and all of the other joys of normal work. I'm sure you want to see some qualifications: I received a B.A. in English - my concentration was writing - from Loyola University New Orleans in 2012. I also minored in Philosophy. You can probably tell that the skills I learned during my academic career involve writing, reading, more writing, and editing. I've been editing for a few years now - much more frequently the last six months - and it doesn't seem I'll grow tired of it anytime soon. What's my turn-around like? It depends on the project - but I aim for 48 hours at the latest. If you absolutely need it rushed, I can do 24. I'm just going to throw some prices over here. I've found there's a disconnect in what people say they want from an edit and what they actually want, so it seems important. Proof-reading! I'll go through your article, fix your grammar, make little improvements, make little comments asking for clarity here and there, and so on. This is not a huge edit; this is when you want a second pair of eyes for a quick read. Proof-reading is .40 cents per 100 words; there is no limit on the size of the piece (a thousand words, five thousand, fifty thousand - same price). It's $6.00 by the hour. Editing! I don't have a light / heavy division; I just edit. I'll fix your grammar and your syntax, cut out every unneeded word and sentence, make comments, make suggestions, and generally tear into your writing with so much vigor you might think I have something against it. Editing is .80 cents per 100 words - and comes out to $12.00 an hour. The price is a bit negotiable; if you can promise a constant flow of work, I wouldn't be against going down a bit. What about writing? A dollar per 100 words. It's is negotiable! What about transcription? I aim for around $0.75 per audio minute - much like writing, that is also negotiable!  less
