I moved from Wisconsin to New York City after I graduated from university with my B.A. in history. My work background includes multiple non-profit groups, including the World Council of Churches, where I served in their United Nations offices and advocated for policies in the areas of women’s rights and human rights. This work demanded strong communication skills, including writing, editing, and public speaking, as well as a strong knowledge of communicating with appropriate levels of formality.
Later, I received a full-scholarship to attend Columbia University with Union Theological Seminary for a three-year program of study. During this time, I took courses at the Foundation Center to improve my grant writing skills. I subsequently served as the leader of a humanist community in Brooklyn for three years. In this position, I gave public lectures in the areas of history, philosophy and ethics in addition to writing curriculum on ethics for children ages 2-15.
I am certified by the University of Cambridge to teach English, and I am currently completing my Master of Education degree in education.
COPYWRITING & EDITING: I have experience writing copy for websites, newsletters, book chapters, and grant applications. In addition, I have experience with writing and editing extensive academic papers and documents ranging in length from 500-25,000 words. I am very comfortable writing with APA, Chicago/Turabian, and MLA style citations.
WEDDINGS: I've performed hundreds of weddings in one of the most diverse cities int he world: New York City. I have experience with and opinions on everything from ceremonies to officiants, venues to caterers and decorations. I can write you a personalized ceremony or write for your wedding blog.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE - APPROACH TO TEACHING: Together, we will create structured and realistic learning goals through an initial assessment and ongoing monitoring of progress. I strive to empower my students with lessons organized around specific themes and which develop skills holistically through student centered lessons. I focus on both productive skills (speaking & writing) as well as receptive skills (listening & reading) while seamlessly integrating learning of language systems, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, functions and discourse. I incorporate a range of interesting activities that move from controlled practice to a freer practice and follow every session with helpful feedback on both correct and incorrect language usage.
