The written word has been a passion most of my life, and it became my career 18 years ago. Since 1997 I have written and edited copy for magazines and newspapers through freelancing and being on staff. From 1999-2007 I worked as a general assignment and beat reporter for a newspaper, and took over as managing editor in 2001. My responsibilities included editing copy of other staff writers and providing photographs for the newspaper as well as myriad publications put out by our publishing company. From 2007-2013 I lived in Australia and worked under contract with a national publication group for which I provided copy and photographs for travel magazines. My go-to handbooks for writing and editing are Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style," "Chicago Manual of Style," and the most current version of "The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing and Media Law." That said, I respect language and the nuance punctuation provides to make copy snappy, interesting and readable. I believe that in editing, the author's voice is more important than following "rules." Of course spelling, grammar and punctuation are of utmost importance. I keep a light hand while editing unless the project needs an overhaul--which would be discussed with the author before I made any changes. There is a skill to tell captivating stories.
