My name is Jean Kirvy M. Waga, 20 y/o, from the Philippines. I'm currently in my 3rd year in college, taking up Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts, major in Media Arts in the University of the Philippines Mindanao. I first discovered my passion for writing back when I was still in high school; it was when our English teacher told us to make a poem as we were discussing sonnet that time. I fell in love with the idea of being someone else, doing something else, traveling somewhere else, with the power of words. Writing and I got ultimately intimate since then that I even kept a portfolio of the most random brain farts that I get in an entire 24-hour span. I also joined the school publication although I never really got so attached with it because I was busy with my academics. Though I do remember having contributed 3 major articles for our yearbook. When I reached college, I tried joining our school pub as well and fortunately, I passed the interview. Then from being plain feature writer for a year or so, I was on the verge of getting promoted to feature editor when I decided to quit the job for personal reasons. I settled with a less serious relationship with writing, and just wrote for the sake of leisure. Recently, I got appointed as a content contributor as well for this site called therandomseven.com but I rarely actually contribute because it was on that same period when I got hired as a part-time customer service representative in a call center (by the way, it was already my third time to work as a seasonal customer service representative that time).
With regards to some other skills that I do think I possess, I have spent most of my college years directing plays and short films both for academic and non-academic purposes. We had this short film project back in first year where I was the assistant director and writer, which topped among 5 other entries, therefore granting us a high score for that subject. In the same year, I also directed a play for our Filipino subject, in which I was awarded as the "best director." In the summer of 2012, I directed a short film which we submitted as an official entry for an anti-smoking campaign spearheaded by a renowned director/celebrity here in our country. It got qualified in the top 10 nationwide, however later on it was disqualified for an overtime of 9 seconds. Just last year, I also directed a short film which was a major requirement for our aesthetics class. We got a score of flat 1 for that, hence our professor decided to submit our film (together with 4 other films from previous batches) as an official entry for the Mindanao Film Festival, and luckily, it got qualified.
As for other things that I do in my spare time, I also sing and write songs (though admittedly, it's quite hard because I do not know how to play any instrument!). Back in high school, I used to get appointed as the class composer for this annual songwriting competition among the 4 sections per year level which was held as a tribute to the patron saint of our school (I finished my elementary and secondary education in a catholic school, you see). And for the 3 times that we had this activity, and in all those 3 times I was the composer, the class which I belong to got to be the champs. In my fourth year, this songwriting competition got suspended for some reason. But since we were in our 4th and final year, we did have an alternative songwriting activity wherein all 4 classes were tasked to come up with an original graduation song. The winning song would be used as the official graduation song for the batch. In our case, we shared the award with another class, but theirs was preferred to be learned. So be it. :)
Well I think that would be enough to share about my career goals and experiences. If given the chance, I would most especially like to work as an editor or head writer of a renowned lifestyle magazine in the future.. but that would still be way way ahead. :) for now, this job interests me and I think this would really prepare me for my bigger aspirations in life.
