I am available for translation, subtitling, transcription and associated language tasks in English and German. My strength is in German>English language pair because I am a native English speaker, with German as my second-language. I am qualified to Masters level in German translation, as well a high level of written and verbal fluency in German and on an essay/dissertation and research basis in English. I have worked on a number of freelance projects over the last three years, from translation of academic texts and news/magazine articles, to subtitling for a documentary and audio transcription. I have received positive feedback for my work and am always willing to complete tasks to the best of my ability and to work flexibly with the needs of the customer. My work away from translation has predominantly been customer-facing and so I am a strong customer service worker and confident communicator.
Born and raised in the United States and currently based in Cologne, Germany, I am a professional, experienced translator who can help you create the document you need, each and every time. Unlike many other translators here on Odesk, I only offer the service I do best: translating from German, into English. As a translator, I get asked a lot of questions. Here are answers to some of the most common ones: Q: What are your qualifications in German? I am a fluent speaker of German who has attained C2 certification from the Goethe institute. In addition to being a long-time resident of Germany, I have completed a university degree program in the German language. Q: What are your qualifications in English? I am a native speaker of English, with a degree from a prestigious American university - but perhaps more important is my background as a writer of technical and marketing copy for a variety of U.S. based companies. I have a deep love of the written word, and strive to create effective copy, no matter the language. Q: Do you translate from English to German? No. In the "real world," professional translators specialize in translation from a target language to their mother tongue. Very, very rarely will you ever find a translator in a brick-and-mortar job who will "reverse translate" into a language other than their native one - no matter how fluent they may be. The reasons for this are myriad, but if you've ever read a non-native translation, you probably already know why. Q: Do you translate from other languages, too? No. I do speak Italian and French comfortably; however, I can't claim to be 100 percent fluent, so I don't offer translations from these languages. Unlike many other Odesk providers, I prefer to offer only what I can do well. While this approach does limit my business, it makes for happier customers, and less headache for me. Q: What can you translate for me? In the past, I've translated: Website, brochures and marketing materials Press releases Reports Newsletters Presentations CVs and applications Terms and conditions, employment contracts Internal communications User guides Training materials In short: if it's written in German and you need it in English, I'll translate it! If you have any other questions that haven't been answered here, please feel free to contact me - I'd love to speak with you about your project!
