My name is Stuart Mackenzie and I am hoping to find work as a freelance or contract translator. I am a graduate of South-East Asian Studies with Development and Thai language, and previously spent a number of years working as a translator/editor (Thai to English) in Thailand. I studied Thai language (speaking, reading and writing) and culture intensively for three years, initially in the UK and subsequently in Thailand as part of a four-year multi-disciplinary B.A. degree. During my time in Thailand I was employed at PSA Asia Pacific, Thailand - a small Bangkok-based risk and security assessment company - as an in-house translator and report writer. My main responsibilities included translating Thai news articles into English and writing and editing weekly and bi-weekly South and Southeast Asian reports, which consisted of the latest socio-political news and analysis from those respective regions. Since returning to the UK I have been working as a freelance translator. Most of the jobs I have undertaken have been translation of official documents (marriage, birth certificates, police reports, etc). However, I have also undertaken the translation of many other types of material, such as academic, medical and business related documents for example. Furthermore, I have also do a fair amount of copy-editing and proofreading. When not working on translation jobs I have also found time to run my own small online clothing business. This has proven to be an enjoyable venture and one which necessitates basic administrative skills in terms of editing and updating website content, emailing customers and suppliers, and managing the business accounts, as well as a good eye for detail to ensure orders are correct and complete prior to dispatch. I am currently looking for freelance or contract jobs that will enable me to utilize the translation and copy-editing skills I have acquired while also serving to broaden my knowledge and understanding of other translation based industries.
