Transforming words and visions into reality is my motto. Writing invites ideas, histories, connections, creations, dreams, and aspirations to come to life. In a variety of ways, personal and professional stories move forward into our world: memoirs, biographies, fiction, nonfiction, family stories, articles, blogs, even grant writing. I bring 21 years of professional expertise to this sacred process of writing as a published author, independent scholar, and executive manager in the nonprofit arena. I provide editing, research, freelance and ghost writing, public speaking (e.g., workshops, sermons, and lectures), grant writing, grant reviewing, project management, and nonprofit consulting. My passion, skill, and experience in these many aspects of writing place me in a unique position to assist individual and organizational clients. My specialty areas include writing from a historical perspective, research, copy editing, grant writing, and project management. In September 2007, I founded Writing the World, LLC. This woman-owned small business is a registered Limited Liability Corporation in Colorado, U.S.A. I revamped my organizational website (www.writingtheworld.com) and started a blog on Hope from History in November 2013. Beginning with one editing client, I have worked with an additional twelve individuals and groups. I have been researcher and editor for author Rudolf C. Gelsey for almost seven years, beginning with his second book and now his third one, Mending Our Broken World: a Path to Perpetual Peace (4th edition, 2014). I also consult with his new nonprofit group, Perpetual Peace Initiative. I edit individual, one-time projects such as an independent scholar’s journal article (2014), doctoral student’s dissertation (2012), author’s first political intrigue novel (2009-10), among others. I provide copy editing plus substantive review. My primary passion has been writing since I first learned the alphabet. Throughout my schooling and career, I have called upon this skill. For example, in the early part of my professional life as a social worker, I wrote newsletter articles for the organization. I continued this journalistic strand in almost every other organization. Graduate work further strengthened my writing (M.S. in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Nebraska at Omaha; Ph.D. in Religion and Social Change from University of Denver/Iliff School of Theology Joint Ph.D. Program) along with honing my critical thinking and research capabilities. With this foundation, I became a published author in 2003. I publish book reviews in a variety of periodicals: The International Journal on World Peace, Nebraska History, Peace & Change, and The History Teacher. I produced numerous encyclopedia articles for BlackPast.Org along with others in forthcoming works, University of Kentucky African American Encyclopedia and Encyclopedia of American Historic Sites and Landmarks. Two chapters in anthologies discuss the lives and labor of former betabeleros (Mexican-origin beet field workers) in the sugar industry of Western Nebraska. My first full length book brings to life the spiritual journey of L. Maria Child (1802-1880), one of the most well-known activists and authors of 19th-century America (forthcoming from Swedenborg Foundation). Starting in the nonprofit world in 1993, I put my writing and communication skills to work as a successful grant writer and project manager. At New Foundations Nonviolence Center (1993-2005), I rose from Development Director to Executive Director. I remained in the latter capacity at Colorado Women’s Agenda (2005-6) where I developed three new programs: Inclusiveness Initiative, Grassroots Organizing, and Internship Program. I provided grant writing and editorial skills to Greater Denver Interfaith Alliance (2007-10). With Votaw Colony Museum, Inc., I co-coordinated our two-day public history events held in different locations in eastern Kansas (2006-11). I especially enjoyed my project management work at BlackPast.Org (2008-13) where I coordinated photo permissions for the group’s online reference center and developed a new section on African American and African Diaspora Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) history. Currently, I help New Community move forward in their organizational growth from an all-volunteer organization to one with paid staff and adequate funding. I created their website as one part of this growth (www.thenewcommunity.us).  less

I'm currently making my way as a multimedia designer, freelance-style. Here's a brief history of me career-wise: I received a BA from Franklin and Marshall College in Neuroscience. I had designs on becoming a doctor. To this end, I completed all coursework toward an MA in Pathophysiology at SUNY-Buffalo, whereupon the plan was to apply to med schools. But I'd gotten a little creative by this point in my life in the way of writing fiction and drawing. By dint of some of these samples, I hung a U-ey, tires screeching and all, and applied to film school. So now I have an MFA in Film and Media Arts from Temple University. After a fair amount of grad-level work in cinematography and 16mm film, I shifted my focus to screenwriting. After a brief foray into the publishing world (satisfying a writing bug is a persistent theme in my life), I parlayed my MFA into a series of gigs in corporate video. Great experiences all. At Bluestone Software, I edited a lot of audio and video, learned some Flash, HTML, CSS and even some OOP fundamentals. Bluestone Software was sold to Hewlett Packard, and they promptly dismantled the once-promising startup. Still, very cool to have witnessed the "dotcom" age firsthand. I scrambled for a couple of years - freelancing as a video editor, teaching screenwriting and film analysis, being a tech for a U-Penn sleep study, etc. I got back into corporate video at Pharmastar. This was a mom and pop shop specializing in the creation of training programs and materials - print and video - for clinical drug trials. Here I did a ton of video editing - medical education kind of stuff -.and had an intro to motion graphics. As Pharmastar grew into United BioSource Corporation(UBC), I grew into a Production Manager and then even Associate Director of the Creative Services Department, where at the apex of the position I managed Translations, Instructional Design and Video Production. And I think I did a decent job of it. I loved and respected the people I managed. Alas, I didn't enjoy the administrative aspects very much and didn't have the right energy for it, not in a corporate setting anyway. So even as I was moving up, I kind of wanted to come back down ... to the making of things, to getting behind a desk and trying shit out- that is, drawing out the artistic from a terrain that might otherwise be kind of dry. I went to film school, after all. Had eschewed the lucrative sciences in favor of writing and drawing. So I asked to step down, which was tough to do. It took a year to find the right time to transition but eventually it did happen, and I am forever thankful for it. Again a lot of video production and video editing. But this time around, I got delved deeper motion graphics - Motion and After Effects. I learned some 2D and 3D animation - After Effects and Blender. Also, I finally patched up a long-neglected absence in my multimedia skillset and learned a good deal of graphic design - Photoshop and Illustrator. These were good times and I learned a lot and produced, shot and edited some useful instructional videos. By now, however, UBC was sold to Medco, who in turn merged with Express Scripts, who found little use for our division and spun us off as Bracket. Business floundered a bit during this time and there was some downsizing... which brings me to where I am now. I have been freelancing ever since, which is great... most of the time. By the way, you can visit my website - www.vivekgahunia.com - to see some samples and learn a little more about me. At this point in time, the website is a work in progress and I will have more samples on there in the coming weeks and months. What I can offer: Video Production - I've produced many shoots, using professional HD cameras. I know how to light a scene, run a set, etc. Video Editing - I am expert in FCP and Premiere, though I work primarily in the latter at this point. Animation - I am expert in AfterEffects and am equipped with some DigiEffects plugins. I am proficient in Edge Animate as well, if you're looking for code-ready animations. Graphic Design - I'm not a hardcore visual artist - i.e. I did not go to art school But I am proficient in the creation of elements in support of animation as well as stand-along print media items. For instance, if you want a newsletter, I can design one for you in InDesign. And smaller items like business cards, postcards, logo creation, I can do that also. Web Design - This is not something I do very much of, but I know HTML, CSS and Javascript. And I am familliar with PHP and MySQL, too. So if you need work along these lines as well, I'm willing to listen. Copywriting/Screenwriting - this is a forte of mine, for sure. If you need any kind of writing or editorial services, I think I'd prove to be of great help to you. Translations - I can coordinate this service for you. In my corporate life, I had founded and managed the Translations department.  less
