Let me introduce myself: My name is Stefan Apel and I am a native German speaker based in Dresden (Germany). I am permanently looking for side jobs as writer and translator (language pair: English -> German). After graduating in telecommunications, I started working as a technical writer for some well-known companies like Lucent and Epcos and wrote / translated dozens of user guides, press reports, articles and leaflets covering a wide range of topics. My main areas of specialization are measuring technology, electricity supply, telecommunications, IT / Software and Web technologies.
Twenty five years experience in various medical backgrounds has proven to be a useful resource for illustration and design. During that time, I spent about 9 years working professionally as a graphics designer and illustrator for a large medical corporation. In addition to creating the visuals, I collaborated with a team of educational developers, designing layouts for medical diagrams and anatomical plates which were used in various study materials. This required a little finesse in desktop publishing, working with programs like Word and PowerPoint, to help create presentations used in conference halls and class rooms. Occasionally I might also create a brochure or newsletters for use in-house. In addition, I gained experience in other areas of multimedia by creating logos, clip arts and cartoons for the company, editing videos, scanning and revising x-rays and photographs, and reviewing and testing software being used in interactive links on web sites that were under construction. Currently I have a home-based office and use a Mac Pro, utilizing the Adobe Creative Suite and the Microsoft Office Suite for the bulk of my work. I prefer to work over the internet, but will travel to meet in person if need be. I enjoy spending my time doing various odd projects. I've designed tattoos, created illustrations for books, and built an on-line store to display my original art work which can be purchased and printed on T-shirts and and other types of merchandise. I enjoy coming up with unique new concepts for logos and business cards. Actually, for pretty much anything. My family is very interested in genealogy, so I've spent hours enhancing and repairing cracking, discolored old photographs for ancestry purposes. I've painted various murals on walls and floors, usually in basements and kids bedrooms, and have dabbled in all sorts of craft work, from jewelry to sculpting in clay. Kids come from all over to see my outdoor displays for Halloween and as you will see in my portfolio below, I've carved a few pumpkins. Some projects involve little photo shoots, such as the pumpkin one below, and several months have been spent dedicated exclusively to taking photos and writing descriptions for various items to be sold on eBay. I am more than willing to try new things. I'm a very curious person, and enjoy learning about everything. Working Relationship: I prefer hourly work, but will also accept a fixed rate as long as I can still track my time on oDesk. This allows both of us to track my progress in a way you can see and follow along with, using the tools that oDesk provides. If we agree on a fixed price in advance, I will not go over it: I will simply stop the clock and continue working as needed. The terms would only change if additional work is added, and even then they would not change without discussing those terms with you first. The emails through oDesk will keep us both accountable. I will travel if needed. Patience: I do need to understand exactly what it is you want, and I often won't get that on the first try. I am one of those learning disabled folks who hear and see things in a different way - you may have to explain your concept to me several times, in different ways, before I understand fully what it is you want. Sketches and drawings help, and seeing the actual document or areas where the images are going to be placed will help me understand the purpose behind the image. Knowing what sort of text and white space is surrounding a piece will help to visualize a better layout for the design which is to occupy that space. Any issues I have with clients generally spring up due to a lack of communication. I need you to give me as much detail as possible. Shortcomings: I am not good with portrait work, unless it is for pets. I have some experience working with videos, animation, and 3D graphics, but not enough for expert work. I mention it, though, because it's absolutely fascinating. I love manga, and 3D modeling and texture design. I would be very interested in working in it again.
