"Though I am sure she is bus[y] and in demand, she never made me feel like I couldn't reach out to her for help. I would recommend her to everyone and give her a 1,000 star rating!" "She is both professional, with a very strong work ethic; and oh so pleasant, with a very caring attitude. Where I stumbled in my writing, she cleared it up." "What I appreciated about Jessica outside of her amazing editing skills was her ability to really want to know the writer and the writer to know her. She made making the writer-editor relationship very easy and she was so welcoming." "If you are looking for an editor that will do a professional edit along with educating you to become a better writer, then hire Jessica! She helped me with my writing along with building up my confidence." I am a highly skilled editor with over fifteen years of experience. I am extremely professional, efficient, and thorough. I care about helping you achieve your goals. Though I have been editing for a long time, editing has never been just a "job" to me. I am passionate about helping authors and I aim to create a strong connection with everyone I work with.

NOTE: I am an experienced, skilled editor who will not consider working for $0.003 per word...which translates to about $2.75 per hour for manuscripts written by novice writers that need extensive editing (in excess of 20 corrections per page). There's much more to editing than simply reading and inserting commas here and there, so if that is your budget, you'll want to look elsewhere. -- BLU ---------- I have a love for the written word and a razor-sharp eye for errors! I’m the indie author and small publisher’s best friend, because my editing is a valuable combination of copy, line, and developmental. I look at the manuscript's ENTIRE scope, the viability of the storyline as well as the writing. I also offer storyline/plot evaluations. Romance publishers, in particular, need this service to prevent spending hundreds of dollars on stories that contain implausible and inaccurate situations that render them un-publishable. It’s better to spend a few dollars to learn if a plot is viable (or if it isn’t, how is might be fixed) before greenlighting the writing than to learn after you’ve paid a ghostwriter for, well, something unusable (and that ghostwriter will likely decline to do any revisions, leaving you in a lurch). Romance is my specialty; however, I also edit nonfiction, business, and medical documents, as well as other fiction genres. I treat each client’s document as if my name were going to be publicly listed as the author. Contact me, and let's discuss what I can do for you! Here’s a brief summary of the services I offer: EDITING. I don’t simply insert a few commas here and there and submit for payment. I check the entire document for typos, overused/misused/missing words, incorrect facts, inconsistencies, redundancies, contradictions, implausibilities, pacing, confusing narrative, pronoun misuse, adverb overuse, point-of-view (in fiction) errors, tense, transitions, clarity, syntax, and of course, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure. PROOFREADING. Commonly believed to be the same as editing…it’s not. Proofreading is best done after editing is complete. This includes correcting missing or incorrect punctuation, incorrect word usage, misused homonyms, missing words, irregular word or line spacing, inconsistencies in statements and formatting, typos, misspellings, and grammatical errors. PLOT/STORYLINE EVALUATIONS. Are you a small publisher who has spent hundreds, or even thousands, on stories that turn out to be worthless? Let me evaluate your ghostwriter’s storyline before you pay to have it written, potentially saving you hundreds of dollars. I’ll tell you what’s wrong with it and make suggestions for resolution (or inform you that it’s hopeless). I’ll also review the first 500 words of the manuscript. GHOSTWRITING. Anything I write for you is guaranteed to need little editing. However, I only consider ghostwriting if a) the client provides a story outline (I would never give up all rights to a storyline I created), b) there is a reasonable weekly output of 6-8k words (10-15k words per week is a full-time job!), and c) I am paid at least 3 cents per word. Also, I do not take on projects of more than 100k+ words. TRANSCRIPTION/TYPING. Dictated or handwritten: random thoughts/notes, correspondence, medical reports, fiction or nonfiction manuscripts, and one-on-one conversations (I do not transcribe reports with multiple speakers). My experience: • Professional writer for over 20 years, nonfiction (newspaper columnist) and fiction (40+ novels of romance and women's fiction published under my pen name(s), plus ghostwritten titles). • Professional proofreader who worked for pharmaceutical giant Abbott Labs in that capacity. • Experienced editor with an 8-year history on Upwork. Top Rated. • Retired multispecialty medical transcriptionist; qualified to edit medical documents. • Romance specialist. With so many published romance novels to my name, I possess a thorough understanding of the genre and know what works and what doesn't. I am a book doctor who can clean up plots that contain outlandish elements (e.g., the billionaire who personally meets with the woman hired to clean his offices to explain her job duties to her, etc.) and revise them into a plot that is both engrossing and *believable.*

    1. Translation: English to Korean, Korean to English, French to Korean, French to English I grew up speaking both English and Korean. I was born and raised in Seoul and later moved to San Diego where I am currently based. At Yale, as a french major, I had the opportunity to study at Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris. I also spent two summers there, working at Galerie Maeght and Atelier Isabelle Menu. Thanks to my background, I can understand and distinguish the nuances in three different languages, rooted in three distinct cultures. Since joining Upwork, I have worked on a wide range of projects including MTPE, emails, letters, presentations, websites as well as legal and medical documents. I have also interpreted webinars and court hearings. I provide translations that are not just accurate but relevant. Language is dynamic and adaptive: New words are created. Some change meanings over time or die out. This pattern reflects broad social changes, including shifting norms. I strive to take these observations into account when I translate or interpret for my clients. In short, I can guarantee high quality work, based on intimate knowledge of the culture and 5+ years of industry experience. 2. Editing As an editor, I support projects in various stages—from shaping ideas to proofreading the final draft. I specialize in essays for college and grad school applications, cover letters, research papers, and presentations. Writing is never easy. Telling stories to strangers makes us feel vulnerable. Besides, we are never sure if we used the right word or the right tone. I can offer clear suggestions, so the writer can benefit from constructive feedback. As for style, I prioritize highlighting each writer’s unique voice to ensure a compelling read. About Me: I graduated from Yale with a BA in French and History of Art in 2016. At Yale, I received the 2015 Scott Prize for the best French essay. (The paper analyzed the cinematography in the 2013 film "Blue Is the Warmest Color.") I helped found the Yale Photography Society where I co-organized the annual student exhibit and taught Korean at the Center for Language Study as a peer language tutor. My early experience is built around short-term projects: I translated curatorial texts at Galerie Maeght in Paris and edited a book by the residents at MeetFactory, a contemporary art center in Prague. Shortly after moving to LA, I interned at Matthew Marks and the American Cinematheque. At the latter, I had a unique experience live interpreting French intertitles in "L’Horloge magique" (1928), Starevich's surreal puppet animation film. Thanks to Gwen Deglise, then head programmer of the Cinematheque, who recommended me to Outfest, I screened short and feature submissions at the nonprofit for four years. Most recently, in 2022, I worked as a language consultant for an episode of the AppleTV show "Little America." I translated parts of the original script into Korean and assisted dialect coach, script supervisor, and 1st AD on set.

***Owner of Ink Worthy Books, a full-service editorial and publication company providing cover-to-cover services and support to self-publishing authors of soulful nonfiction.*** This is my passion, my heart’s work, and what makes me a happy camper. It is not merely my “job.” With more than thirteen years of writing, editing, and publishing experience, I have built my business around helping self-motivated writers take their ideas all the way to publication and beyond. At Ink Worthy Books, we believe that every book has the power to change the world. As a trained nonfiction book coach and developmental editor, I lead a group of skilled professionals who specialize in book editing, design, and marketing. This means that we can support an author’s entire project without risking quality due to the overworked eyeballs of one professional. This approach to self-publishing support saves you hours of searching for skilled pros in the world of one-and-done freelance giggers and alleviates the stress of managing all the details which go into publishing a book. In addition to an array of community and coaching support options, IWB’s hands-on services fall into five categories: Evaluate - Not certain what your story needs? We offer (free!) creative consult calls along with manuscript reviews to help you determine the best next step. This process saves writers both time and money because they leave with a clear idea of how to move their project forward and without having to guess. Edit - We offer three types of editing, depending on the project’s need: developmental editing, line editing, and copy editing. Because these terms are sometimes used inconsistently in the industry, we will discuss your book’s needs in detail to ensure you are confident in what type of editing support you will be receiving. Design - Our design team creates the high quality cover and interior files for all written formats (ebook, soft cover, and hardcover), all to the specification of the particular platform the writer is publishing on. This process also includes a final proofread, which ensures your book shines prior to publishing. Publication Prep - The Ink Worthy Books team helps self-publishing authors manage ALL the loose ends that need attention to prepare to publish their book: writing your author bio, crafting the back cover description and Amazon description, pricing and ISBN support, author website creation, optimization of the book’s Amazon profile, and much more! Rest assured, we can help with every step of the way! Marketing - We support writers in creating a marketing and promotion plan and materials to promote their book both leading up to and following publication. If you are looking for a line or copy edit of your manuscript draft, please see my specialized profiles for more details on how I can help! I look forward to connecting with you soon! ***Please Note: At present, I am not available for ghostwriting.*** Hello! I am a professional novelist and developmental/copy editor with over ten years of full-time experience on Upwork. I do not work hourly jobs, but the site requires us to enter a figure anyway. I will be happy to discuss fixed-rate jobs with you. Writing as "Janeen O'Kerry," I am the author of nine historical fantasy novels from Dorchester Publishing. These were originally released in paperback from 1996 – 2006 and are available once again through Amazon, along with several new titles. You can see all sixteen of my own books under "Janeen O'Kerry" in the Amazon bookstore. Note: I do not use artificial intelligence (AI) software in any part of the writing or editing process. Medical Writing & Editing – Articles and information for your website, e-book, blog, or patient handouts. Three to five cents per word with a $15.00 minimum. Developmental/Content Editing & Critiquing – In-depth suggestions only. No copy editing or rewriting. *If you prefer, I can critique just your first 5,000 to 10,000 words. You will have plenty to work on after this and it saves you money! One-half cent per word with a $15.00 minimum. Copy editing – Line-by-line corrections of grammar, spelling, punctuation and word choices. Re-casting of sentences for clarity. Suggestions and some fact-checking. Includes a blurb of about 120 words for your Amazon detail page and a 140-character piece for advertising and social media posts. One cent per word with a $15.00 minimum Proofreading – Punctuation, spelling, and word choices only. No rewriting or suggestions. One-half cent per word with a $15.00 minimum Plot outlines – Detailed, scene-by-scene outlines for novels and novellas in many genres. Includes basic descriptions and traits for three or more of the main characters. Length of outline will be five percent of your desired final word count. For example: If you are planning an 80,000-word novel, I will provide a 4,000-word outline. Three cents per outline word with a $50.00 minimum. Synopsis – from your draft synopsis and any other notes you have, I can create a polished synopsis of your book that is ready to send to an agent or publisher. I will also include a 140-character piece for use with advertising or social media. Three cents per synopsis word with a $50.00 minimum. KDP Formatting – Formatting your e-book and/or paperback manuscript for Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) program. Includes a searchable Table of Contents for the e-book, and page numbers with Table of Contents for the paperback. I will edit and format your cover copy ("blurb") for both formats. Note: You must use your own Amazon account for the actual uploading, but you may consult me through Upwork messaging if you encounter any difficulty. The formatted manuscripts will be sent to you as a .docx for the e-book and a .pdf for the paperback. One-fourth of a cent ($0.0025) per word with a $50.00 minimum. This includes formatting both the e-book and the paperback version in the same project. Book Cover – I use selfpubbookcovers.com for covers. From that site, I can select several genre-suitable, pre-made book covers for you. Once you choose the one you want, I can add the title, sub-title, and author name on the sample cover. Then you will use your own account on the site to duplicate my work on the sample (it's easy) and then buy and download the cover. You may consult me through Upwork messaging if you have any questions. The site's cover price includes two identical covers: one for your e-book and one for your paperback. $50.00 to find and format a suitable cover for you. You will also have the cost of the cover itself, which is about $90.00 to $130.00. These are professional-quality covers at a very good price. Cover Copy (the "blurb") – I do not need to read the entire book. From your short description, outline, or synopsis of the book, I will create: A blurb of about 120 words for the book's back cover and for the Amazon detail page. A short 140-character piece for advertising and social media posts. $40.00 per book includes both of these. Ghostwriting – *not available at present $0.05 (five cents) per word for original fiction $0.04 (four cents) per word to write from your complete, detailed outline $0.03 (three cents) per word to rewrite from your existing manuscript For proofreading and copy editing, I will of course provide a free sample proofread or edit of about 500 to 1000 words depending on the length of the work. I am a full-time writer and editor and always open to ongoing projects. I will be glad to sign an NDA for you if you wish. The many books that I have written or copy edited are all getting four and five-star reviews on Amazon.com. Allow me to help make your book into one that will have lasting appeal and continue to sell for years to come, as my own books do. Thank you! Janeen Sloan / "Janeen O'Kerry"

With 15+ years of administrative and customer service experience, I have impeccable organization, time management, and logical thinking skills. I'm proficient in most trending online office programs and tools. Professional communication is very important to me as is the intention of developing a solid, trusting relationship with my clients. Writing and editing are both great pleasures and with the advent of increasing use of artificial intelligence, I am staying current on both the impending integration of AI into our professional worlds, as well as the tools designed to promote and ensure original (human) writing takes precedence when needed. For clients using AI, a good editor will be needed regardless of the speed of AI evolution. Editing is a fine art and very talented editors/writers will always be needed to compete with fully AI written content. Social media content creation and management cannot be both fully automated and successful. It's an ever-changing puzzle and requires human touch and attention. I'd love to help you engage and grow your audience!

Editors Hiring FAQ

What is an editor?

An editor is a content professional who is responsible for ensuring the final, polished version of any written content produced for the client. Editors are used by organizations for the purpose of refining structure, pacing, spelling, punctuation, and overall style for a variety of works, including websites, novels, white papers, reports, and blogs.

How do you hire an editor?

You can source editing talent on Upwork by following these three steps:

  1. Write a project description. You’ll want to determine your scope of work and the skills and requirements you are looking for in an editor.
  2. Post it on Upwork. Once you’ve written a project description, post it to Upwork. Simply follow the prompts to help you input the information you collected to scope out your project.
  3. Shortlist and interview editors. Once the proposals start coming in, create a shortlist of the professionals you want to interview.

Of these three steps, your project description is where you will determine your scope of work and the specific type of editor you need to complete your project.

How much does it cost to hire an editor?

Rates can vary due to many factors, including expertise and experience, location, and market conditions.

  • An experienced editor may command higher fees but also work faster, have more-specialized areas of expertise, and deliver higher-quality work.
  • A contractor who is still in the process of building a client base may price their editing services more competitively.

Rates typically charged by editors on Upwork are:

  • Beginner: $20 per hour
  • Intermediate: $29 per hour
  • Expert: $50 per hour

Which one is right for you will depend on the specifics of your project.

How do you write an editor job post?

Your job post is your chance to describe your project scope, budget, and talent needs. Although you don’t need a full job description as you would when hiring an employee, aim to provide enough detail for a contractor to know if they’re the right fit for the project.

Job post title

Create a simple title that describes exactly what you’re looking for. The idea is to target the keywords that your ideal candidate is likely to type into a job search bar to find your project. Here are some sample editor job post titles:

  • Prolific copyeditor needed to make web content shine
  • Experienced editor needed to polish business book draft
  • Need editor/proofreader fluent in Spanish to edit children’s book

Project description

An effective editor job post should include:

  • Scope of work: From grammar check to structural review, list all the deliverables you’ll need.
  • Project length: Your job post should indicate whether this is a smaller or larger project.
  • Background: If you prefer experience with certain industries, styles, or technical proficiency, mention this here.
  • Budget: Set a budget and note your preference for hourly rates vs. fixed-price contracts.

Editor job responsibilities

Here are some examples of editor job responsibilities:

  • Review white paper draft, featuring contributions from several SMEs, and refine content to ensure singular voice and style
  • Take first draft of author’s blog entries and incorporate a humorous tone throughout
  • Ensure final PowerPoint presentation contains proper grammar, sentence structure, and spelling
  • Review draft of how-to booklet and edit to ensure it’s written in second person

Editor job requirements and qualifications

Be sure to include any requirements and qualifications you’re looking for in an editor. Here are some examples:

  • Experience writing and editing large volume of blog posts
  • Knowledge of applicable style guides such as AP, MLA, and AMA.
  • Ability to regularly meet deadlines while providing high-quality work
